SPIRITUAL DEPTH AND DRAMATIC POWER
Bach’s cantatas are like cathedrals: magnificent structures that impress from afar, yet reveal, upon closer inspection, deeply personal confessions crafted with meticulous care. The struggles and joys expressed in these works continue to speak to listeners with elemental force, transcending religious denominations and historical eras. More than 200 surviving cantatas represent not only the pinnacle of Baroque music, but also a musical encyclopaedia of the human soul.
Under the direction of György Vashegyi, the Purcell Choir and the Orfeo Orchestra explore Bach’s creative genius through five remarkable works from his sacred repertoire. BWV 150 (Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich), considered by some to be his earliest cantata, speaks in the purest tones of trust through its intimate character and celebrated closing chaconne. In striking contrast, BWV 81 (Jesus schläft, was soll ich hoffen?) depicts the storm-tossed sea with almost operatic drama, making palpable the tension between fear and tranquillity. In the remarkable dialogues of BWV 138 (Warum betrübst du dich, mein Herz?), the doubts of the solitary individual meet the reassuring responses of the community, while BWV 39 (Brich dem Hungrigen dein Brot), renowned for its monumental opening chorus, stands as a dignified tribute to selfless, compassionate love. The programme concludes with BWV 122 (Das neugeborne Kindelein), which, in the radiant spirit of the Christmas season, brings the joyful, dance-like pulse of renewal and new hope.
Five cantatas, five distinct characters, guiding listeners along an emotional journey that ranges from the quiet stillness of devotion to stormy dramatic intensity, as music dissolves human doubts into the soul’s ultimate tranquillity and hope.
