Who doesn’t know the Viennese Classics? But how familiar are we with Baroque Vienna? Do we know what came before - how Vienna became the capital of musical life, attracting the likes of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven? This concert offers a sweeping insight into the opera scene, orchestral culture, and sacred music of Baroque Vienna. Renowned conductor György Vashegyi and his ensembles take us on a journey through works by composers active in the Austrian capital during the first half of the 18th century, presented in the magnificent setting of the Eger Basilica. And who will we hear? Johann Joseph Fux, composer at the imperial court in Vienna, holds a unique place in music history. Remarkably, for many German composers of the Classical era, Fux - not Bach - was considered the ultimate master of counterpoint. His treatise Gradus ad Parnassum (Steps to Parnassus) remained a foundational text for composition students well into the age of the Viennese Classics. Vienna was already a meeting point between Italian and German musical traditions, and Fux worked alongside two celebrated Italian composers: Francesco Bartolomeo Conti, known primarily for his operas, and Antonio Caldara, a leading figure in sacred music. Their influence was so significant that when Vivaldi’s opportunities dwindled in Venice, he didn’t relocate to another Italian city - but to Vienna, where Italian music enjoyed tremendous prestige. Vienna also attracted ambitious young musicians from beyond the empire. One of them was Jan Dismas Zelenka, a Czech composer whose career ultimately flourished in Dresden, but who spent many formative years in Vienna - as a student of Fux, naturally. This concert will feature multiple works by each of these composers, allowing us to discover their distinct musical voices and lesser-known sides. Travel back in time with us - to Baroque Vienna!
