Zoltán Mucsi was born in Abony. His father is Zoltán Mucsi Sr., and his mother is Irén Kelemen.
As a child, he initially wanted to become a football player. He completed vocational training as a metalworker and later obtained his secondary school diploma. Before becoming an actor, he worked as a metalworker at the Shipyard and at the Hungarian State Railways, and he was also employed by the Hungarian Post as a newspaper delivery worker.
His acting career began within a literary stage group called Kőtövis, which he joined through a friend; it was here that his talent was first noticed. Between 1979 and 1995, he worked at the Szigligeti Theatre in Szolnok, starting as an assistant actor. He applied several times to the Academy of Theatre and Film Arts but was not admitted. Between 1995 and 1997, he worked as a freelance actor. In 1997, he joined the newly established Bárka Theatre, and in 2002 he became a member of the Krétakör Theatre.
He gained nationwide recognition with Miklós Jancsó’s film The Lord Gave Me a Lantern in Pest (1999).
He frequently performs together in films and stage productions with actor Péter Scherer (Pepe).
