Boaz Sharon

Boaz Sharon is Professor of Piano and Chairman of the Piano Department at Boston University and Director of the Piano Program of the Boston University Tanglewood Program. He is a Steinway Artist.

An internationally renowned pianist and artist/teacher, he is the first prize winner of the Jaen International Piano Competition, Spain. A frequent judge on international competitions, he was on the juries of the the Top of the World Competition, Norway, the Berliner Philharmoniker International Piano Competition, Rudolf Firkusny International Piano Competition, Prague, the Composers of Spain International Piano Competition, Madrid, the Kaufman International Piano Competition, New York City and the Sterinborgh Piano Competition in Xiamen, China. He also is a founder of the Liszt International Piano Competition in Moscow. 

His students have won top prizes in international piano competitions including the Hamamatsu, Grieg, (Norway)  New Orleans, Jaen (Spain), the Janacek (Czech Republic), the prestigious Seoul Arts Center Award and Dallas International Piano competitions and finalist in the Leeds International Piano Competition.

He is Director of the Chengdu International Piano Festival since 2010 and previously was the artistic director of the Prague International Piano Masterclasses for 15 years. He is a faculty member of the International Piano Certificate Artists Program at the Ecole Normale de Musique Alfred Cortot in Paris and Fondation Bell’Arte.

A frequent performer in China, Sharon has given recitals at the Shanghai, Beijing, Xinghai, Shenyang, Tianjin and Sichuan Conservatories, at the Beijing Concert Hall and has performed and taught in many other cities in China. In 2017 Sharon will be on Israeli Television (an interview with Professor Arie Vardi), in Brazil at an international piano festival in Sao Paulo, in New York City at Yamaha Salon and will perform the Brahms Second Piano Concerto in Brasilia, Brazil and will be a judge in the 2018 the Dallas International and the Olga Kern International Competitions. Other recitals will include recitals at Rice University and masterclasses in Fort Worth and in Arlington, Texas.

Among over a thousand concerts and recitals over the years, Sharon has performed at the Steinway Celebrity Series in London, at the Gasteig Hall in Munich, the Rudolfinum in Prague, the National Gallery in Washington DC, Seoul National University, Mozart Hall, Seoul, and has performed with the Israeli Symphony Orchestra in Jerusalem. He also gave a 12 concert tour in recital and with orchestra (The Yekaterinburg Philharmonic Orchestra) across Russia in recent years and gave recitals and taught in 2015 at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory and at the Gnessin Academy in Moscow.

Sharon has given hundreds of masterclasses over the years including at Sao Paulo University and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, New York University, Tel Aviv University, Stockholm Royal Music Academy, McGill University , Gnessin Academy, Moscow and many others. He is a recipient of the Prague Charles University Medal–one of ten given internationally for “significant contributions” to that university.  He also has given lectures  on 20th-Century French Piano Music at Cambridge, Oxford, Edinburgh, Juilliard School of Music, Stanford, Columbia and Yale Universities.

Sharon recorded for the Nonesuch/Warner Brothers Hyperion (London) and Unicorn (London) labels. His Nonesuch recording was one of the Ten Best Recordings of the Year in Newsweek Magazine and the Washington Post called him “a pianist of superb technique and keen stylistic sense” and following his recital at the Museum of Modern Art in Sao Paulo, Brazil the review stated “Right from the start of the first piece, a Passacaille by Couperin – the audience became readily aware of a great master dialoguing with his art and his instrument.
