Prizes

First prize: 20,000 EUR and invitation to conduct concerts
Second prize: 10,000 EUR and invitation to conduct concerts
Third prize: 5,000 EUR and invitation to conduct concerts

Finalists will be awarded a certificate.

Course of the competition

Pre-selection: Based on the videos submitted by the applicants, the Jury will select 40 applicants to participate in the first round of the competition.

In all rounds, competitors will be expected to learn all repertoire, but will be allowed to use sheet music.

First round: preliminaries – Competitors will be expected to conduct one of the overtures below:
1. W. A. Mozart: The Magic Flute
2. L. v. Beethoven: Egmont
3. G. Rossini: The Barber of Seville
4. C. M. v. Weber: Der Freischütz (The Marksman)
5. G. Verdi: Nabucco
6. F. Erkel: Hunyadi László
7. R. Wagner: The Flying Dutchman
8. B. Smetana: The Bartered Bride

Second round: semi finals
Competitors will be expected to conduct one of the arias or one of the concertos, and one of the symphonies listed below:

Arias:
1. G. Rossini: The Barber of Seville – Cavatina of Rosina
2. G. Verdi: A Masked Ball – Aria of Renato, 3th act
3. Ch. Gounod: Faust – Ballad and Jewel song – recitativo and one verse
4. G. Puccini: Manon Lescaut – Aria of Manon „Manon’s death” 4th act
5. R. Leoncavallo: Pagliacci – Prologue – from the return of introduction l

Concertos:
1. F. Liszt: Piano Concerto No. 1 in E-flat major; 1st and 3rd movements (3/4)
2. F. Chopin: Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor; 2nd and 3rd movements
3. A. Dvořak: Cello Concerto in B minor, Op. 104; 1st and 2nd movements
4. B. Bartók: Violin Concerto No. 2; 1st and 2nd movements
5. D. Shostakovich: Concerto in C minor for Piano, Trumpet and String Orchestra, Op. 35; 2nd and 3rd movements

Symphonies:
1. J. Haydn: Symphony No. 88 in G major
2. W. A. Mozart: Symphony No. 36 in C major; K. 425
3. F. Schubert: Symphony No. 5; D. 485

Third round: finals
Competitors will be expected to conduct one of the symphonic works listed below:
1. Kodály Z.: Háry János szvit
2. R. Strauss: Till Eulenspiegel vidám csínyjei
3. C. Debussy: A tenger
4. Bartók B.: Táncszvit
5. Kodály Z.: Galántai táncok
6. Dohnányi E.: Szimfonikus percek

Competitors shall use sheet music editions defined by the Organizer, the list of which will be published on the website of the competition soon 

How to apply?

  • Only applicants born after 1 January 1979 will be accepted
  • Application forms completed by the applicants and other requested documents can be submitted by email to the following address: solticompetition@filharmonia.hu

Besides the completed application form, the following documents are required:

  • a copy of the receipt of the bank transfer of the application fee
  • a copy of the DECLARATION about the need for an invoice, signed by the Applicant
  • a copy of the applicant’s identity card (only EU citizens) or passport (EU and non-EU citizens)
  • the applicant’s curriculum vitae focusing on the applicant’s professional and artistic development
  • a recent photograph (of at least 2-3 MB file size) of the applicant
  • HD quality self-introduction video, in which applicants can give vent to their creativity and an at least 15-minute-long HD quality video of an orchestral rehearsal or a concert conducted by the applicant, in which the applicant’s movements can be clearly seena 

Application fee
Early bird application fee by 28 February 2017: 190 EUR

Application fee from 1 March to 1 May 2017: 350 EUR

Early bird applicants who will not be selected to participate in the competition will be reimbursed 100 EUR.
Applicants submitting their application on/after 1 March, who will not be selected to participate in the competition will be reimbursed 200 EUR.
